The main difference is a capacity expansion. There is also the portability, speed and price. As for scalability goes, the iMac is more or less established, but you can add more RAM and increase the size of your Hard Drive, no PCI slots for adding other things like video cards. This is not so much because of many things that are now available as an external device such as a D / A converter, external Hard Drive, etc. As a semi-professional you will do well with the iMac, but if you're serious about making the film, I recommend the Mac Pro or G5 tower. I am a semi-professional photographer, and I found myself in need of portability. I had a G5 tower and a screen 35 pounds 45 lbs and I had to put it all in remote locations to produce DVDs in the area, as well as other services. The problem took everything that was heavy and slow …. make at least four trips to the car, then connect everything. I sold it and got the Macbook Pro, and covers my needs well. I have seen an iMac, it would be a little easier to configure, and may have to consider as well. As the speed goes, I noticed a improvent my G5 to my Macbook Pro, so with the iMac, you should be fine. The only difference could be if you plan on compressing a lot or should do so promptly distribution in place, you might consider the tower. I never done a wedding in the same place, but I know some people who do. They use laptops, and then connect to a G5 with Qmaster to compress quickly. For me, the value of the iMac is amazing. speed is obtained and a large screen to go with it. One can then focus on improving of RAM or something like an investment of $ 700 or $ 1000 in one of the screens of Apple. In fact, I recommend getting an Apple thing to watch else, because I had a screen other than Apple, and I hated it. Now I have an Apple and is much better!
